If you’re into performance upgrades, you’ve probably heard about the OTR intake. It comes up a lot when people talk about mods for Holdens or LS engines. But is it actually worth putting one on your car?
At GenTech Automotive in Canberra, we work on a heap of high-performance cars, and we’ve fitted a lot of OTR intakes over the years. So we thought we’d break it down: what it is, what it does, and what you can expect from it in the real world.
First, what even is an OTR intake?
OTR stands for “over the radiator.” An OTR intake is a type of cold air intake that sits right above your radiator, usually at the front of the engine bay. Instead of sucking in warm air from inside the engine bay, it grabs cooler air from outside the car.
Cooler air is denser, which means more oxygen gets into your engine, and more oxygen means better combustion. Better combustion means more power. Simple as that.
It’s a common upgrade for Holden Commodores, especially anything with an LS engine, like the VZ, VE, VF SS, or HSV models. You’ll also see them on LS-powered project cars or street machines.
What kind of gains can you expect?
This is the big question: how much difference does an OTR intake actually make?
In our experience at GenTech, you can expect 5 to 15 rear-wheel kilowatts (rwkW) just from the intake alone. But it really shines when you pair it with a proper tune. A lot of our customers who do an OTR intake and tune together will see 15–25 rwkW gain depending on the rest of the setup.
We’ve even had some cases where people combined it with a full exhaust system and saw over 40 rwkW improvement.
That’s not just numbers on paper. You’ll feel the car pull harder, especially in the mid-range. Throttle response is quicker, and the engine just breathes easier.
It’s not just about power
More power is great, but there are other reasons people go with an OTR intake.

Better throttle response: You’ll feel the engine react quicker when you put your foot down.

Cleaner engine bay: Most OTR intakes look tidy and neat under the bonnet.

Better airflow: It opens things up for future mods, great if you’re planning a tune, cam, or forced induction later on.

That induction noise: Yep, it gives you a bit more growl when you’re on the throttle. Subtle, but fun.
Real-world driving feels better
We’ve had heaps of Holden and LS drivers tell us the same thing: the car just feels nicer to drive. You don’t have to be racing it to notice the difference. Even cruising around town or on the highway, the car feels smoother and lighter on its feet.
And when you do want to give it a bootful, it’s just more fun. More pull, more response, more reason to smile.
Any downsides?
Like any mod, there are a couple of things to think about.

Tuning: Some OTR intakes require a tune to get the best out of them. You can run them without one, but the real gains come when the ECU knows what to do with the extra airflow. We always recommend a tune with your OTR intake, and we can do that for you at GenTech workshop.

Installation: It’s not always just a bolt-on-and-go job. Some OTR intake kits need a bit of trimming or tweaking, depending on the model. Nothing too crazy, but it’s worth getting it done by someone who knows these cars.

Filter maintenance: Because it sits at the front, the filter can pick up more dirt or bugs. You’ll need to check and clean it more often, but that’s a small trade-off for better performance.
Is it worth it?
If you’ve got a Holden or LS and you’re chasing a bit more go, an OTR intake is a great first mod. It’s not the most expensive upgrade, but it offers good bang for buck. Add in a tune, and you’ve got a noticeable difference in how the car drives.
