If you’re working on getting more power out of your car, whether it’s adding a turbo, supercharger, or bigger cams, you’ve probably heard someone say “you might need bigger fuel injectors.” But how do you know when it’s time to upgrade? And what do fuel injectors really do anyway?
What do fuel injectors actually do?
Fuel injectors are small parts with a big job. They spray fuel into your engine at just the right time and in just the right amount. The computer in your car (the ECU) controls how long the injector stays open, which is called pulse width.
The goal is simple: the right mix of fuel and air gives you smooth power, better throttle response, and helps your engine run safely.
If your injectors can’t flow enough fuel, especially when you push the car hard, things can go wrong fast. Lean fuel mixtures (too much air, not enough fuel) can cause knock, overheating, or even engine damage.
When are stock fuel injectors not enough?
Most factory fuel injectors are made to handle stock power levels, with just a little wiggle room. But once you start adding power, they can hit their limit. Here are a few signs or reasons you might need to upgrade:
1. You’re adding boost (turbo or supercharger)
Forced induction (like a turbo or supercharger) pushes more air into the engine. More air means you need more fuel to balance it. If your stock fuel injectors can’t keep up, you’ll need bigger ones to feed that extra air.

2. You’re upgrading cams or going big on NA power
Even without boost, if you’re chasing big naturally aspirated (NA) power; bigger cams, higher compression, stroker kits; you’ll eventually need more fuel. Upgraded fuel injectors can help get the most out of your engine mods.
3. Your fuel injectors are maxing out
When your injectors are working at 85–90% of their capacity all the time, they don’t have much room left for safety. This is called duty cycle. If your tuner tells you the injectors are maxed out, it’s time to upgrade.
4. Poor tuning or misfires
If you’re experiencing random misfires, rough idles, or your car’s just not running as clean as it should after mods, the fuel injectors could be part of the issue. Sometimes they’re just dirty or old – but if they can’t flow what your engine needs, a new set might be the answer.
How do you choose the right fuel injectors?
Fuel injectors come in different flow rates, usually measured in cc/min (cubic centimetres per minute) or lbs/hr. The right size depends on your engine size, how much power you’re aiming for, and if you’re running petrol, E85, or something else.
This part can be tricky, and it’s easy to get it wrong. Go too small, and they can’t keep up. Go too big, and your car might idle rough or run too rich. That’s where we come in. At GenTech, we can help you choose the right fuel injector setup based on your build and goals.
Do fuel injectors affect tuning?
Yes, big time. Tuning and fuel injectors go hand in hand. Once you swap injectors, your ECU needs to know how to handle them. Every fuel injector has its own characteristics: dead time, flow rate, spray pattern, etc. And your tuner needs that data to make the car run right.
If you’ve just dropped in bigger injectors without tuning, don’t be surprised if the car runs worse than before. But with the right tune, you’ll get more power, better throttle response, and keep things safe.
What else might you need to upgrade?
Upgrading fuel injectors is sometimes just one part of a bigger picture. Depending on your goals, you might also need:
- A bigger fuel pump
- Upgraded fuel pressure regulator
- Better fuel lines or filters
- Injector spacers or adapters (depending on your engine)
